Stock Library License types.  The differences between Editorial Only,  Royalty-Free and Rights Managed Images.

There are different license types available for the sales of these photos. Rights Managed (RM), Royalty Free (RF) and Editorial (E).  It is up to you to understand the differences and select the license type you wish to use. You can use different licenses on different images. A brief description is made below however you will find many articles on-line with more detail on image licensing.

EDITORIAL ONLY

Editorial only images can only be used for illustrating non-advertising materials in press or electronic editions. Usually such pictures are used in news and magazine illustration and must be credited as: (c)Argus Photo Archive

This means that you can not license this image for commercial use. Please see Rights Managed.

ROYALTY FREE

Represented on the search system by RF

This is a simple form of licensing and the price is determined by file size, but can vary depending on the provider. 

PERSONAL USE ONLY - not to be put on ANY social media platform. Can be reproduced for print.

The buyer pays a one-off fee - they do not have to pay royalties to contributors on a use-by-use basis. 

The buyer will not know who else is using the image. 

The buyer should check that the image has the appropriate releases before promoting the image to a royalty free license. 

RIGHTS MANAGED

This is a non-exclusive licensed for a specific use.

The buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the image, but another buyer can also purchase and use the image under the same licence. 

The buyer must specify, the intended use, media, territory and duration. 

Pricing is based on intended use, media, duration and territory. We will deal with the image buyer to negotiate the best terms possible for the image use. 

The buyer should check that the image has the appropriate releases before promoting the image to a rights managed license.
